Columbia is located in the center of South Carolina at the junctions of Interstates 20, 26 and 77. It is South Carolina's most populated city, the state capital, the county seat of Richland County, the home of the University of South Carolina's Carolina's main campus, and the site of the South Carolina State Fairevery October. Part of Columbia also extends into Lexington County. Columbia was settled by Europeans in the early 1700s and chosen to be the site of South Carolina's new state capital in 1786.
Fort Jacksonis located southeast of the city. It is the largest and most active Initial Entry Training Center in the U.S. Army. There are more than 45,000 Basic Training and Advanced Individual Soldiers trained on the post annually. Since the down sizing of military installation around the world, the post has inherited other mission as well. The Soldier Support Institute moved to the post in 1995, "Training today's leaders for tomorrow's adventure". The additional schools also included the U.S. Chaplain School and the Department of the Defense Polygraph Institute.
